The issue of planned notification for parents before their child is questioned about serious offenses in schools has surfaced in Northern Virginia. Last week at the June 7th school board meeting, the Fairfax County School Board voted to postpone action on a policy that would change the notification process for children involved in serious infractions, including drug related activities. Fairfax County middle and high school administrators spoke against this measure as being a “serious compromise” to the intricate balance of school safety and accountability. The actions of the administrators have postponed this topic for now, but all bets are off as to whether it will become an agenda item for the board in the future or end up as a legislative proposal for the General Assembly in 2013.
