The Virginia Department of Education (DOE) has released two memos regarding the upcoming changes for middle level and End-of Course (EOC) assessments this fall and the spring of 2013.
The new reading and writing tests which are based on the 2010 English Standards of Learning will be given in the fall of 2012 EOC reading test and the spring 2013 EOC writing tests. The new blueprints which were published in September 2011 are available on the DOE web site. Writing prompts for middle level English will be evaluated on a well developed response to the topic provided. Students taking the EOC writing test will respond to a persuasive prompt.
The DOE has also announced that the science tests will be based on the 2010 Science Standards of Learning and will begin with the fall administration of the EOC science tests and the spring administration for grades 3, 5, 8 and EOC. A new Periodic Table of Elements will be included in this new chemistry assessment.
