The push again this year by Delegate Robert Bell, R-Albemarle for home-schooled students to be allowed access to participation in public school athletic programs has failed. The bill, Senate Bill 1442, failed yesterday by a vote of 8 – 7. Senator Harry Blevins, R-Chesapeake, sided with several democrats on the committee to defeat the bill. Senator Blevins is a former high school teacher, coach and principal, member of VASSP and was the first recipient of the Outstanding High School Principal of Virginia award.
In an article from the Richmond Times Dispatch, one parent at the hearing for the bill commented that he wanted home-schoolers to be able to participate in public school athletics. Senator Richard Saslaw, D-Fairfax responded, “You knew the ground rules when you opted to home-school your kids and that’s the choice, and that is your choice to make.” The parent responded with the overused mantra that he “pays taxes” that support public schools. Senator Saslaw responded: “You paid taxes for an F-22 fighter, but that doesn’t give you the right to fly it.”
Well said Senator Saslaw, well said!
