Lunch or Not Lunch, That Is The Question!

Some unusual recent inquiries to the Virginia Department of Education have prompted responses that are, quite frankly, to the point and perhaps for some, disappointing.  Two burning issues which prompted a response by Superintent’s Memo last week are: how is the planning period time length established for middle /secondary teachers and is lunch required?

First, the SOA address the planning periods for middle/secondary school teachers with respect to how 5/6 of the instructional day is calculated. The planning periods are calculated based on time rather than on the number of class periods in a daily schedule.  The amount of time allocated for the unencumbered planning period should be based on the length of the instructional day in minutes regardless of the scheduling configuration of the school.

Questions have also been raised as to whether the instructional day includes lunch. According to 8VAC 20-131-5 of the SOA, it does not, but remain calm as schedules again are arranged in minutes, not just period/block groups.

If you would like to explore this educational conundrum further, you may access it in the Superintendent’s Memo for April 26th at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2013/109-13.shtml
