At the end of the year, the students taking the double load math schedule scored higher than their peers taking a single course of math. This gain, however, was noted to be dimished in the following two years in middle school and by high school, the gains had diminished to a very small difference.

A similar study done in Chicago in 2012 in which students taking a double-dose of algebra had a different result. Students in this study in the 9th grade were found to have had substantial and positive benefits in their math studies.

So where do you turn? As a high school principal in a rural Virginia school district, I have witnessed the wisdom of an old middle school principal who required his 9th grade students taking algebra I to also take general math. And yes, some parents were unhappy because their student had to forfeit an elective, but yearly, when these students came to the high school, they were well prepared for Algebra II.

If you would like to review the report, please go to: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/curriculum/2014/07/math_class_time.html?intc=mvs

A new report in Curriculum Matters from Stanford University’s Center for Education Policy Analysis reports on success and also limited success in a double up on math classes in middle school.
