VASSP, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Education, will launch a new service for Virginia administrators this September. This service, “Friday Focus” will be aired beginning in September, 2012. Information regarding this new initiative is listed below. If you would like to be a presenter, information/qualifications are listed below. You may contact the VASSP office at 804.355.2777 for more information.
Dr. Kathleen Smith, director of the VDOE Office of School Improvement, has given VASSP permission to use the studio on the 17th floor of the Monroe Building in Richmond to video tape a new VASSP membership service. We are going to call this service “FRIDAY FOCUS: Leadership Videos For Principals.” Every other Friday beginning September 7 through December 14, VASSP will offer a new streaming video complete with PowerPoints for secondary school principals and assistant principals. Although VASSP will feature a new topical presentation every other Friday, the actual video will be accessible anytime online after its original launch date.
Guidelines to be a presenter are as follows:
1. Expert (or at least pretty close!) on the topic
2. Prefer to have two presenters per topic
3. Design the presentation to no more than 25 to 30 minutes
4. Presentation must be Accompanied by PowerPoints
5. Presentation may include additional PDFs for viewers to download
6. Presenter cannot use presentations for personal gain (e.g., presenters cannot use the video presentation to sell books, consultant services)
7. Presenter must be addressed in professional attire. The streaming video will be equipped for participants to view the presenter the entire time, PowerPoints the entire time, or split-screen so participants and view both the presenter and PPTs.
In addition to “The Eight Elements of High School Improvement,” some topics that VASSP could feature are:
1. 2012 General Assembly Update – (a presenter is confirmed)
2. Teacher Evaluation
3. Breaking Ranks – (presenter is confirmed)
4. Data Management Tools for Principals
5. 2013 General Assembly Legislation – What to Look For – (a presenter is confirmed)
6. Advantages of School Membership in the Virginia Student Councils Association – (a presenter is confirmed) [Topic needs VDOE approval.]
7. Advantages of VASSP/NASSP Membership – (a presenter is confirmed) [Topic needs VDOE approval.]
8. 9th Grade Transition
9. Working with a Mentor and Coach – (a presenter is confirmed)
10. Teacher Observation: Techniques and Tools (a presenter is confirmed)
11. Trials and Tribulations of a 4×4 School Day
If you are interested in presenting on any of the above topics or if you have other topics (we are looking for 20 topics for the 2012-2013 academic year) that secondary principals might have an interest in for a FRIDAY FOCUS, please let me know as soon as you can. We are anxious to establish topics and presenters and to reserve studio dates. Most likely you will need to come to Richmond the night before your video/PPT presentation and stay at a hotel near VDOE. We will have you at the studio by 9:00 a.m. where you will meet Dr. Lynn Sadot and have an opportunity to do a couple or so takes before actually saving the video stream. Our guess is you should be done by noon. VASSP will pay for your hotel accommodations and reimburse your automobile and food expenses. Dr. Barrack does not know at this juncture if we can actually pay for your time to do the preparation and the taping; however, he will be contacting vendors to see if there is interest in sponsorship.
