A recent blog in EdWeek Teacher (November 12) brought to mind a reminder for a strategy that new teachers and perhaps some of your veteran teachers need to master. The blog,”Teaching Secrets: Start With the Exit Ticket” by Ben Curran returns to a technique that is valuable, especially now with the levels of accountability for all educational staff.
Included in the blog are several tips for teachers that you may wish to share:
1. Write the Exit Ticket First: Before deciding what to do /say, create the exit ticket and plan with that goal in mind.
2. Keep it Brief: The ticket should only have a few questions on it. Keep in mind that you will need to read it quickly in order to check on student understanding.
3. Use What You Learn: A well written ticket will help identify what students are struggling with so you can focus on reteaching efforts.
4. Teach What Is on the Ticket: If you want students to show mastery on the assessment, teach them how to do what is on the assessment.
5. Assess Your Teaching: Use the ticket to reflect how you did with the classroom instruction. You may find that your best efforts were not enough and some alternative learning method needs to be used.
