In a recent edition of Business Insider, an article is following a new trend with teens: technology may be taking place of significant adolescent activities. The article, “My High School No Longer Holds Dances Because Students Would Rather Stay Home And Text Each Other,” provides a look at a unique phenomena for adolescents – technology over individual or group socializing at school events. Students can text, use facebook and other ways of communicating and thus avoid going “back” to the school building or other locations for social events.
In the more rural areas of our country, schools are quite often the largest structure that can accomodate social events and by default, become the location for social activities. In the more affluent communities in the nation, students can find alternative locations to gather and socialize, thus minimizing the support for formal and informal social events like proms and homecoming dances.
In her article, author Caroline Moss notes”..it is no suprise teenagers are much more selective when it comes their real-life interactions. Whether these activities be parties or movies or trips to the mall, they quickly become adult-free, unlike the school gym. Which is why texting has become far more exciting than anything a school dance can offer.”
