Technology has broken through the old dictum that when it snows, schools are closed and often so are students’ minds. In a recent blog, “For Some Schools, Learning Doesn’t Stop On Snow Days,” the opposite is evident in many school districts/divisions: do learningĀ at home with school programs online while snowy weather shuts everything down, including the public schools.
The lack of learning opportunities is an age old issue, but with more school divisions using BYOD technology, students are able to access school generated studies at home, as long as the power does not go out!
While this learning opportunity at home is a significant change from watching television while being stuck at home, there are some drawbacks:
- Not every student will have the technology hardware or internet access to take advantage of on-line activities. These student may fall behind the progress made by their peers.
- The one -to-one interaction between teachers and students is missing and for some students, this is critical, even in a technology rich environment.
- This report noted that the longer students remained at home, the interest and enthusiasm for learning begins to drop.
