Virginia DOE Salary Survey

If you wonder how your school division teacher and administrative salaries compare with those across the Commonwealth, the Virginia Department of Education has published this information by school divisions.  Published in January 2013, this report lists salary information from fiscal years 2011, 2012 and budget information for 2013.  Year to year percentage changes in salary averages are shown for statewide and division data.

Using the calculations, predictions of annual average salaries were to increase for classroom  teachers, assistant principals and principals from fiscal year 2012 to fiscal year 2013. Of interest on page 3 of the report is a summary listing of statewide salary averages for teachers, assistant principals and principals. A breakdown for these categories are:

Teachers

Average Percentage Salary Change FY2011 to FY 2012         1.11%

Budgeted Percentage Change  FY 2012 to FY 2013                  0.89%

Principals

Average Percentage Salary Change FY 2011 to FY 2012        (0.04%)

Budgeted Percentage Change FY 2012 to FY 2013                     3.21%

Assistant Principals

Average Percentage Change FY 2011 to FY 2012                      0.61%

Budgeted Percentage  Change FY 2012 t0 FY 2013                   3.24%

As you can see, administrators were budgeted for a significant change in FY 2013 and the average was catching up with the change for classroom teachers.  For many years, classroom teachers received a higher percentage salary increase than building administrators.  Unfortunately, the ritual automatic salary increase for educators is declining. Declining enrollment, local tax base issues/changes and unforseen costs such as increased VRS contributions by school divisions make salary increases difficult to predict and provide.
