The Virginia Board of Education will meet on Thursday, October 23, 2014 to review several items on their agenda. Among the items is Agenda Item : E “First Review of Proposed Plan to Develop an A – F School Grading System in Response to the 2014 Acts of the Assembly.” Action on this item will take place at the November 20, 2014 State Board of Education meeting.
The 2014 General Assembly enacted , as I am sure you remember, to delay (not eliminate, mind you) the reporting of school grades required by the 2013 Acts of the Assembly from October 2014 to October 2016. While the delay has given Virginia public schools a time frame to focus efforts on school improvement through a variety of actions, the identification by “…assign(ing) a single letter grade to each school or assign a series of letter grades to each school based on some or all factors…” is still listed in the amended document.
In the revised plan, the designation as “A – F grading scale” has been modified to “A – to – F performance grading system.” Either designation still points to the same original issue: identification using a letter designation that can create a stigma for the school, the school’s community and the school division as a whole.
Think this will be a better arrangement? The new designation is due by December 1, 2015. Stay tuned.
